Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator behind Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Primal, has reportedly been trying to get this project made for nearly 20 years, going back to around 2008. Tartakovsky is easily one of the most influential animated directors of the modern era, so the idea of him taking on Conan is a pretty damn good fit.

The series has now been greenlit by Cartoon Network Studios and is being produced for Amazon Prime Video. Tartakovsky will serve as showrunner, executive producer, and director, alongside Darrick Bachman, Fred Malmberg, and Mark Wheeler.

The animated series will be titled Queen of the Black Coast, based on the Robert E. Howard short story first published in Weird Tales in 1934. From the sound of it, the show will focus not just on Conan as a warrior, but also on his intelligence, depth, and complexity, while still delivering the action and adventure the character is known for.

I’m ready to see Conan the Barbarian back on screen in any form. He’s a character with a long legacy, and it is a well-deserved one.
