Unreal Tournament – Open Source & Available to Download Now!

So it’s come to my attention in the last few days that many of you don’t know Epic has a new Unreal Tournament in the works, but it’s true, they do.
Unreal Tournament is the first game in the game series since 2007’s Unreal Tournament 3.  The ninth entry into the game seines started development in May of 2014.   What makes this entry in the Unreal Tournament series unique is Epic went Open Source on this project, allowing any would be programmers to download the source code and have a go at one of the big names in first person multiplayer shooters.   Currently the game has hit it’s two year development anniversary, and just last week Epic announced a new map, Underland, check out the trailer below.

Unreal Tournament is expected to have 7 game modes including: Assault,  Bombing Run, Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Warfare, and Duel, and while not everything is confirmed currently, we should see all these game modes in the final product.  Since this is open source, the game could end up being taken places not expected by either Epic or the community, so who knows what the final product will actually bring.  Unreal is also going to be open to mods, and it’s already been confirmed that the classic ChaosUT mod will be making a comeback.  ChaosUT was one of the very few select mods to be included in the Original Unreal Tournaments Game of the Year Edition.

Currently the game is available to download by anyone, it’s still in a early development stage, and is considered Pre-Alpha, but that shouldn’t stop the hardcore Unreal fans from having a go at it. Just don’t expect a super polished game if you give it a try, it’s still in a primitive state, but the more you play, the more the community and the developers will learn what the game needs.  The Pre-Alpha season is available to download and play at UnrealTournament.com.  So if you ready to get your UT on, now is your chance.   Unreal Tournament is available for Windows, Linux and OSX, so everyone can get in on the fun.
